Libya Flag - Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya SKU: LBY35P
Libya achieved its independance from Italy on December 24, 1951 and was quickly named the United Kingdom of Libya or the
Al-Mamlaka Al-Libiya Al-Motahidda . It was a federation combining the states of
Tripolitania, Cerinaica and Fezzan. under the leadership of King
Mohammad (Idris) As-Sanousi. On October 7, 1963 the three Libyan states became
one Nation under the name Kingdom of Libya or Al-Mamlaka Al-Libya. During
the time since independence, the nations flag consisted of a white
crescent-and-star on a tri-band red-black-green design. The central black band
was twice the width of the outer bands.
In September 1, 1969 Moaamar Abou-Minyar Al-Qadhafi. lead a
Revolutionary Command Council to power after a one day revolution. Soon after
Libya joined the Federation of the Arab Republics or Ittihad al-Jomhoriyat al-Arabiya
and adopted the Pan-Arabic red-white-black tri-band consisting of three
horizontal stripes of red white and black. It was subsequently amended on
November 11th, 1977 when the Libyan coat of arms was added to the flag making it
distinctly Libyan.
On March 8, 1977 Libya's officially changed its name to Al-Jamahiriya
Al-Arabiya Al-Libiyah Ash-Shabiya Al-Ishtrakia or The Socialist People's
Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. Subsequently, on November 19, 1977 the flag was
changed to a solid green design which has survived to present.
Green is the traditional color of Islam, the state religion. It is also
symbolic of Muammar al-Qaddafi's "Green Revolution". The top right corner of the
flag represents peace, the top left represents life, the bottom right represents
faithfulness to the country and the bottom left represents unity. Flag Measures 36 in x 60 in and is 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
