South Vietnam Flag (Republic of Vietnam)
SKU: RVN35P

The flag of the former Republic of Vietnam South Vietnam often also known as South Vietnam was designed by Emperor Bao Dai in 1948, and was flown in South Vietnam after the country's partition from the North.  A conflict between the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam), allied with the National Liberation Front (Viet Cong) against the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam), and its ally the United States resulted in a war between the two neighbours lasting from from 1965 to 1973.

In 40 AD  the Trung Sisters, waved a yellow flag against the Chinese invaders hoping to regain independence for Vietnam.  In the early 1800's, Emperor Gia Long adopted the Yellow Flag as the symbol of the Vietnamese Nation. A successor Emperor Khai-Dinh in the early 1900's added two red bands to form the Long Tihn or Dragon Flag. In 1945, during Tran Trong Kim's government the middle broken red band was added to the flag in the position between the two red bands of the former Yellow Flag to form the Qu? Ly Flag. Qu? Ly is a divination symbol representing the fabulous unicorn, and six of the Bát Quái (the Eight Trigrams): Càn, Khâm, C?n, Ch?n, T?n, Ly, Khôn, ?oài. This divination of the unicorn represents the sun, fire, beam of light, and civilization.

When former Emperor Bao Dai became the Chief of State of Vietnam in 1948, the flag was changed again.  On 2 June 1948, the Chief of the Temporary National Government of Vietnam, Brigadier General Nguyen Van Xuan, signed an Ordinance specifying  the Vietnamese National Flag as a flag of yellow background.  In the middle of the flag and along its entire width, there are three horizontal red bands separated from one another by a space of the band's height. The three red bands have the divination sign of Qu? Càn, the first of the Eight Trigrams as previous. Qu? Càn represents heaven. Based on the worldview of Vietnamese people, Qu? Càn indicates the South Sky, the Vietnamese Nation, Vietnamese people, and the people's power.

The flag flew proudly in the  Republic of Vietnam from its formation in 1954 until the 30 April 1975, when its capital Saigon was seized by the Viet Kong and was replaced by the flag of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

Flag Measures 36 in x 60 in and is 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
