Saint Lucia Flag SKU: STL35P
Arawak Amerindians first settled St. Lucia in the 3rd century AD, while the Caribs later took over. European discovery of the island is somewhat vague, but it believed to be around 1500 by Spanish explorer Juan de la Cosa. The French and British held many battles over control of during the 17th and 18th centuries with possession changing 14 times. Britain won final control in 1814. In 1838, more than 13,000 slaves were freed by the English. The island was a province of the short-lived West Indies Federation from 1958 to 1962. The island was granted self-government in 1967 and independence in February 22,
1979.
Cerulean Blue represents fidelity. It reflects the
tropical sky and the emerald surrounding waters of the Caribbean Sea and
Atlantic Ocean. The Gold represents the Caribbean sunshine and
prosperity. Cultural influences are noted with Black and White representing
two races living and working in unity.
The design impresses the dominance of the Negro culture vis-à-vis that of
Europe, against a background of sunshine and ever-blue sea. This is represented
by the three triangles in the centre of the flag, symbolising three pitons. An isosceles triangle, is reminiscent
of the island’s famous twin Pitons at Soufriere, rising sheer out of the sea,
towards the sky -themselves, a symbol of the hope and aspirations of the people.
The flag of was adopted on March 1, 1967 to commemorate self government
granted by Great Britain.
