Malawi Flag - Republic of SKU: MWI35P
Prior to the 31st of December 1963, Malawi was known as Nyasaland, and was a British Colony within the African Continent. On 11 May 1914 the British Crown granted arms to Nyasaland. This comprised a leopard with a rising sun reflected against a black background. The Nyasaland Blue Ensign contained the arms in the fly (without roundel) and was used until 23 October 1953 when the territory was incorporated into the Federation of Rhodesia and
Nyasaland and a new Federation flag was adopted. The Federation dissolved on 31
December 1963 with Nyasaland receiving its independence as the self-governing
state of Malawi on 6 July 1964.
The Republic of Malawi officially adopted its flag on July 6, 964. The new flag is a symbol of the "new African independence." with a rising sun representing the dawn of hope and freedom for the continent of Africa. The black represents the people of the continent, the red symbolizes the martyrs of African freedom, and the green represents the nature or environment of Malawi.
