The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, commonly called Jordan (Arabic ?????, transliterated Urdunn), is a constitutional monarchy in the middle east. It borders Syria to the north, Iraq to the north-east, Saudi Arabia to the east and south, and Israel and West Bank to the west. It shares with Israel the coastlines of the Gulf of Aqaba and the Dead Sea. The Kingdom is predominately Islamic and speaks Arabic.

The Jordanian monarchy was set up in 1921, with help from the British. The sons of Sherif  Hussein  ibn Ali, were set up as kings of Iraq and Jordan. HM Abdullah I of Jordan was made the first king of the new Hashemite dynasty. The dynasty originates in the Hejaz and is  alien to Jordan, but continues to rule Jordan with general popular support,

The Jordanian flag: is three equal horizontal bands of black (top), representing the Abbassid Caliphate, white, representing the Ummayyad Caliphate, and green, representing the Fatimid Caliphate; a crimson isosceles triangle on the hoist side, representing the Hashemite dynasty, and bearing a small white seven-pointed star symbolizing the seven verses of the opening Sura (Al-Fatiha) of the Holy Koran; the seven points on the star represent faith in One God, humanity, national spirit, humility, social justice, virtue, and aspirations.  The star is also seen to represent the unity of the Arab peoples within Jordan. The design is based on the Arab Revolt flag of World War I which had been led by Hussein.
