Nigeria Flag - Federal Republic of
SKU: NGA35P

Nigeria received its name from a suggestion made by the wife of Lord Luggard who was a British Governor of the British Crown Colony in the early 1900's. The name come from a combination of the words "Niger" which is Africa's longest river and "Area." surounding it.

The Nigerian flag was adopted on October 1, 1960, the  day upon which Nigeria gained independence from Great Britain.  The design was chosen from a national  competition held in 1959 which set out to establish a flag for soon to be independent Nigeria. A design by a student named Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi was chosen  from almost 3,000 entries.  It was adopted as presented to the judges with the exception of a bright red sun originally positioned in the centre.

The Nigerian National Flag is divided vertically into three equal parts. The central part is white and the two other parts are green. The green of the flag represents the nation's agriculture and rich vegetation, the white national unity and peace. The white is immaculate white and the emerald green is popularly known as the Nigerian Green. It is governed by the Flag and Coat-of-Arms Ordinance of 1960 is also the symbol of authority and instrument of state power. Next to Mother earth, it is the only National symbol worth dying for. It tells the history of a people and their aspirations.

Flag Measures 36 in x 60 in and is 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
