Cameroon Flag - Republic of
SKU: CMR35P

The national flag of Cameroon was adopted in its present form on May 20, 1975. On that date, Cameroon became a unitary state. The former British and French colonies had joined together in 1960 but had operated as states within the Cameroon federal state. The unification of these states resulted in the deletion of two yellow stars positioned formerly on the green stripe.

Cameroon's flag is a tricolor design is adapted from the flag of France. The colour scheme is based on the traditional Pan-African colours of green, gold and red. Originating in Ethiopia, the Pan African colours symbolize reverence to the Rastafarian movement.  Ras Täfäri, which is the pre-coronation name of Haile Selassie I, who  the Rastas of Many Mansions believe is the earthly aspect of Jah or Jehovah is considered to be part of the Holy Trinity. Cameroon is the second of many African nations to adopt this colour scheme.

The Cameroon flag is a strong symbol of unity, both within Africa and of its founding Francophone and Anglophone people. The center stripe stands for unity: red is the color of unity  , and the single star is referred to as "the star of unity". The yellow stands for the sun, and also the savannas in the northern part of the country, while the green is for the forests in the southern part of Cameroon.
