Hong Kong Flag - British Colonial

Occupied by the United Kingdom as a result of the two Opium Wars, Hong Kong and Kowloon were the British doors to commerce with China. In 1897, Britain entered into a 99 year lease for the New Territories. Under British rule, Hong Kong’s official flag consisted of the Union Jack and various Ensigns bearing the Arms of the colony and its Governors. On July 1, 1997, in the presence of HRH the Prince of Wales, and Prime Minister Tony Blair, the British Union Jack and the colonial flag of Hong Kong were raised and immediately lowered for the last time. This was followed by the raising the Chinese national flag and the new regional flag for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region by President Jiang Zemin and Prime Minister Li Peng. After 156 years British colonial rule had ended. The last British Colonial flag to fly over Hong Kong was a blue Union Jack ensign with the Hong Kong coat of arms on a white disk centered on the outer half of the flag. The arms featured a shield bearing two traditional Chinese junks facing each other. Inside the chief is a gold naval crown. The 'embattled' or castle-like design separates the chief from the rest of the shield. The crest features a lion holding a pearl and a dragon standing on a heraldic island bearing a banner labeled "HONG KONG". The two junks symbolise the importance of trade and the raison d'ętre of the colony. The naval crown represents Hong Kong's dependence on the Navy and Merchant Marine, and the battlements commemorate the defence of Hong Kong during World War II. The pearl held by the royal lion wearing the imperial crown personifies the familiar phrase "Pearl of the Orient." The lion and dragon supporters are the British and Chinese cultures of Hong Kong. The island depicts the colony's maritime and mountainous geography. Flag Measures 36 in x 60 in and is 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
